Following the decision from last year MDL was expended by adding a second track at Kindergarten level. We welcomed 48 (instead of 24) new students in the MDL Program!
Expansion of the program will greatly reduce the cost per student enrolled to the program, will strengthen the program and will allow more children from across the county to enter and win the lottery.
Unfortunately unexpected increased enrollment in the school’s attendance zone overlapped with program expansion which lead to an overcrowding at Gleenwood Elementary School. Glenwood’s capacity is 423 students, but enrollment this semester was 513.
On January 10th, 2014 the CHCSS administration released “Recommendations Related to Enrollment Levels at Glenwood Elementary” where it clearly states that : “ it is important to be clear that a level of spot redistricting would be required even if the DL Mandarin program did not expand. The Mandarin expansion has not been the sole reason for the enrollment issues”
On January 16th, 2014 at the the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools board voted 6-1 to expand the Mandarin dual language program at Glenwood Elementary and keep access to the program open to all students in the district via a lottery system. VIDEO
Predicted expansion until 2019
